Immersive technology startup Haptic Solutions had demonstrated their latest scent release system - the Cilia at CES last week. Read more to learn about what exactly it is.

Haptic Solutions is a start up founded by UT Arlington Alumni with a focus on developing immersive technologies for VR and other media.

The idea behind the Cilia is really simple. In response to the correct signals by the software, the unit will release one of 6 (current limit) essential oils via 6 individual variable speed fans. The intensity of the scent can be controlled by fan speed, and the scent quickly dissipates when the fan is shut off. The unit is currently worn over the chest via harness. There are a very large and diverse array of scents currently available to order for the unit.

The Cilia is still in development, but the development kits are available to order for the general public. The latest development kit of the Cilia comes in a more compact form and includes RGB lighting. At this time software support is limited, however they do have SDK's available to rapidly deploy plugins for both Unity and Unreal Engine based experiences. Some experiences that currently support the Cilia include Neos VR, a Cilia specific mod for Minecraft, and Adventure Climb VR.

The company also plans to develop systems for touch and taste in the future.
