Somnium Space, the developers of a blockchain-based VR platform, have revealed the details of their open source VR headset Dev Kit - the Somnium VR1.

Somnium first announced that they were developing a VR headset in Dec 2021, but have kept a tight lid on developments since that announcement. This new headset sparks our curiosity with it's blend of high-end features, including;

  • 2x 2880x2880 Fast LCD display panels
  • 120  degree Horizontal FOv and 100 degree Vertical FOV
  • 2x Color passthrough cameras @ 3864x2192, 90FPS, 120x100 FOV
  • Ultraleap Hand Tracking
  • In house eye tracking solution
  • WiFi 6e for wireless PCVR
  • Lossless wired PCVR connection
  • Native SteamVR and OpenXR support
  • 3x USB-C 3.2 Gen2 ports @ 10Gbps for external accessories and peripheral support
  • Stereo microphones, in-ear headphones, and headphone jack

Lending increased credibility to this project, Somnium have partnered with experienced commercial grade headset producers VRGineers - the developers of the XTAL headset - to help with the development of the Somnium VR1.

Another key partner in this project is Prusa Research, a company focused on 3d printing technology. This partnership will allow for great flexibility and many customization options.

Somnium has indicated that this headset will be a PCVR only headset, although they do anticipate producing a standalone headset at a future date.

The Dev Kit will be on display at CES 2023, and we look forward to hands on impressions at the show.
