Somnium Space, the developers of a blockchain-based VR platform, have revealed the details of their open source VR headset Dev Kit - the Somnium VR1.
Somnium first announced that they were developing a VR headset in Dec 2021, but have kept a tight lid on developments since that announcement. This new headset sparks our curiosity with it's blend of high-end features, including;
- 2x 2880x2880 Fast LCD display panels
- 120 degree Horizontal FOv and 100 degree Vertical FOV
- 2x Color passthrough cameras @ 3864x2192, 90FPS, 120x100 FOV
- Ultraleap Hand Tracking
- In house eye tracking solution
- WiFi 6e for wireless PCVR
- Lossless wired PCVR connection
- Native SteamVR and OpenXR support
- 3x USB-C 3.2 Gen2 ports @ 10Gbps for external accessories and peripheral support
- Stereo microphones, in-ear headphones, and headphone jack
Lending increased credibility to this project, Somnium have partnered with experienced commercial grade headset producers VRGineers - the developers of the XTAL headset - to help with the development of the Somnium VR1.
Another key partner in this project is Prusa Research, a company focused on 3d printing technology. This partnership will allow for great flexibility and many customization options.
Somnium has indicated that this headset will be a PCVR only headset, although they do anticipate producing a standalone headset at a future date.
The Dev Kit will be on display at CES 2023, and we look forward to hands on impressions at the show.
We are delighted to announce that we will be presenting our #opensource #SomniumVR1 #VR headset DevKit and latest design at @CES 2023.
